I hope you all had a great finish to 2019 and brought in 2020 with all the positive thoughts, feelings and moods you expect to get you through this year. Its been a few weeks into the new year and I had a few moments to ponder on how I plan to change my attitude and outlook on some of the big topics that have started this year.
B...B...Brexit!
After all the talk and craziness around will we exit, when will we do it and the general election announcement, has it started to calm down?
Well yes and no. The media have a great way of essentially moving the nation's focus when they feel like it and since Boris got his majority, it seems not many people are fussed about it now. Its funny to see how psychology plays its part in moving and evolving our thoughts and feelings away from topics that we feel so strongly about so suddenly if its not appearing in the news and media.
My feeling on it all is that it's had a major impact on how businesses have performed this year...that can't be denied. From a personal level I think I won't see any differences until the Government sort (or don't sort) the 200+ odd trade agreements they need to get through before we make an exit. So let's see what occurs and happens from there (which I think is a lot people's feelings right now).
Rise of the vegans and climate change
Sometime during 2019, the environmental and climate change argument ramped up after a certain 16 year-old appeared and gave us a good lecturing on how we are destroying the world. I have to admit it does make you sit up and take notice regardless on what you're outlook is.
Since then we've had numerous documentaries, famous celebs (who I agree probably know naff all about it but just want to increase their popularity by jumping on the bandwagon) and mass protests outside Houses of Parliament to enforce rules to save our world. Unfortunately I feel there is one major factor a lot of these people are missing...Consumerism and money. The fact of the matter is that many of the global governments wont or will delay change to ensure the big corporate fuel, retail and industry leading companies make as much money beforehand whilst they find another way to get those millions in.
Going hand in hand with the environmental push is the rise of plant wielding warriors. Numerous TV series and documentaries are filling our digital platforms and screens with how you should completely stay away from meat and start eating everything plant-based.
As with all opinions and perspectives, there are 2 sides to every story.
I have no issue to changing habits (how else are we to evolve and learn?) and trying new ways to live and eat healthier, as I have to admit I have changed certain ways to improve my diet, health and the environment. The problem (which I would say many people are unaware of) is the mass impact of moving towards this extreme lifestyles. Yes becoming vegans or vegetarian is sustainable but it doesn't when the mass public moves in that direction as well. Companies then have to produce more which means more equipment and larger vehicles so more distribution and footprint which then makes the product you're buying contribute almost just as much as when you were buying shrink-wrapped meat/plastic containers etc.
I do hope Governments speed up their plans to change major contributors to climate change but until then my advice would be to not go extreme...the balance is making sure you do a little of both to just keep you on the razor-thin level of being sustainable (or almost).
There are lots more but I'd hate to drone on...I am looking forward to seeing how 2020 turns out but on that, I hope it turns out to be the way you want it to be!
